DR. MARTIN STEPPAN · METHODS & TECHNOLOGY
Bioinformatics & Data Science
Statistical genomics, scientific computing and AI for analysing human data, from biosignals and video to optimised assessments.
SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING
sciCORE · High Performance Computing
I have worked extensively with sciCORE, the University of Basel’s scientific computing infrastructure. Experience with an HPC cluster for computationally intensive analyses complements my work on complex research data.
BIOINFORMATICS & STATISTICAL GENOMICS
Genetic and social determinants
My St Andrews dissertation connects epidemiological data with genetically informed analyses. Methods include genetic correlations and Mendelian randomisation; my research approach encompasses GWAS and SNP data.
COMPUTER VISION
AI-based emotion analysis
Automated facial expression analysis in psychotherapy sessions, compared with human ratings. We also examine the temporal dynamics of emotional expression and interpersonal interactions.
MOVEMENT & TIME SERIES
Movement analysis with AI
Pose detection makes body positions and movement sequences, including gait, accessible to quantitative analysis. Our movement synchrony research examines the temporal coordination of movements in psychotherapy.
BIOLOGICALLY INSPIRED OPTIMISATION
Ant Colony Optimization
Virtual ants explore possible solutions; pheromone trails reinforce successful selections. Our LoPF-Q and personality states studies used this approach to select suitable questionnaire items.
DATA SCIENCE IN PRACTICE
Analysis, linkage & reporting
Statistical modelling, psychometric evaluation and privacy-compliant data linkage, complemented by social network analysis with Gephi, interactive dashboards and scientific online calculators.
Further biological data
Biosignals and neuroimaging complement this work:
The linked studies examine different data and contexts. Video examples illustrate methods; they are not validated tools for employment decisions or clinical gait assessment.
